Abrasives are manufactured in many forms and types. The two main types of abrasives are coated and bonded abrasives. All abrasive manufacturers produce both these types of abrasives as they are used widely and have varied applications. Apart from production, abrasive manufacturers also distribute their products either locally or globally via agents and dealers.
Let us have a look at these two different kinds of abrasives
- Coated Abrasives
These are commonly used abrasives which consist of an abrasive grain that is coated over a material using an adhesive. The material usually used is paper, but even cloth, metal and rubber is used. One of the most common coated abrasive is sand paper. The adhesive acts like a bonding agent between the abrasive grain and the material. When the grain/ mineral is mixed with the bonding agent over the material, upon drying it becomes coarse and thus forms a rough grit edge; in this manner a coated abrasive is made. Another fitting example for a coated abrasive is the edge of a matchbox. Even an emery cloth is a coated abrasive. For industrial use coated abrasives consist of pads, belts, sanding cords and discs.
- Bonded Abrasives
Abrasives manufacturers produce a second kind of abrasive known as bonded abrasive. Bonded abrasives are abrasive that are contained within a matrix and does not involve bonding of mineral over a material. One of the most common bonded abrasive is Diamond. One quality of bonded abrasive is that the both sides of the abrasive are usable. A sharpening stone is a good example of a bonded abrasive. It is important to note that after using a bonded abrasive, it is imperative for the abrasive to be trued and dressed. Dressing simply means cleaning the abrasive of the waste materials. In most cases dressing involves washing the abrasive under running water and cleaning with a brush.
Abrasives manufacturers not only produce abrasives but are also concerned with its distribution. Many manufacturers distribute abrasives globally along with other polishing and grinding tools. Many times abrasive manufacturers themselves do not distribute, but in fact hire distributors who sell the products globally. Distributors may sell in wholesale, retail, agent buying or direct selling. Thus whether you are looking to buy in wholesale, or for home use, abrasive manufacturers are able to provide both to their customers
